In a recent poll, breakouts topped the list of beauty calamities, distressing interviewees more than lines and wrinkles, or even a haircut gone badly. Acne, though usually affecting teens, can occur at any age. Apart from the face, it can also occur on the neck and back. How to treat? First, try out over-the-counter acne treatments, including those containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used acne solution and is known as one of the most effective ones in the market. If you are suffering from mild forms of acne that is non-inflammatory, benzoyl peroxide is considered to be extremely potent. Since it is safe for application on both adults and teens, it is preferred to other acne treatments. Nonetheless, there are some minor side effects. It can bring on dry skin. If you think your skin is too dry, stop applying the treatment for some time and then, administering a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, try once again. Salicylic acid works best on acne that is non-inflamed and it starts by removing the dead skin, thus keeping the pores of the skin pour and preventing blocking. The side effect of this acne solution is that it can cause skin irritation. Users have complained of dryness, stinging or burning feeling, and flaking and peeling of the skin. If there is no improvement in curing acne after a few weeks, ask your family doctor about prescription acne solutions, such as antibiotics, retinoids (Avita, Retin-A) and adapalene (Differin). There are several antibiotics that are recommended by doctors as acne solutions for patients who have moderate or severe acne. Antibiotics prevent bacteria from growing and spreading in the body. Although they show results faster, antibiotics are commonly not favored by patients, because they cause side effects, such as dyspepsia, discoloration of the skin, dizziness and sensitivity to light. For severe cases of cystic acne, your medical practitioner may recommend isotretinoin (Accutane) or may send you to a specialist. Since dangerous side effects are possible, males and females taking Accutane should be carefully monitored by their doctors. If other acne treatments appear inefficient, laser or light therapy may be used.
