Everybody loses scalp hair. At birth, the average head is covered with about 100, 000 follicles - pouch-like sacs that produce individual hairs. Though the number never changes, the activity of each follicle varies as we age. Excessive loss of hair is called alopecia. Heredity, a medical condition or even medication can result in baldness. The most frequently observed type of undue hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. It is responsible for around 95% of the cases of baldness in the United States. Androgenetic alopecia affects largely men. Two factors effects hair growth: a genetic predisposition to excessive hair loss and the male hormone testosterone. Usually, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates the growth of hair, but also shrinks hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, coupled by heightened levels of testosterone and DHT, can adversely affect scalp hair growth. Baldness occurs when lost hair outnumbers re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is lost. Androgenetic alopecia is not a medical condition; it is more a cosmetic issue. Propecia (Finasterine) is one the most efficient treatment therapies sanctioned by FDA. Taken daily in a tablet form, Propecia inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, therefore preventing the shrinkage of hair follicles. The medicine is for males ONLY and must not be taken by women, since it may trigger birth abnormalities. Generic Propecia, which is as potent as the branded version, is low-priced and, thus, more affordable for males experiencing alopecia. As a result of a two-year study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. The vast majority of males reported improvement in appearance. Like all prescription medications, Generic Propecia may lead to adverse side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Generic Propecia were infrequent and did not affect most males. An insignificant number of males experienced some sexual adverse side effects. These side effects were temporary and went away in males after they stopped taking the medicine. These adverse side effects also went away in most males (58%) who continued taking Generic Propecia.
